You need JavaScript enabled to view it Phone: n/a The club was founded long ago in the dark days of yesteryear when men were men and women feared to go out at night – only the latter half of which is still true today unfortunately. The actual date was 1913. Originally the club was called ‘Old Dixonians’, as it was the Old Boys Rugby Club for the former grammar school George Dixon School. The ‘Old’ was dropped years ago as support and the player base dried up from the school when it became a comprehensive and abandoned rugby. This loss of a source of players was a worry, but the club broadened horizons to court new players both native and foreign to the city. The player base accurately reflects the cosmopolitan background of Birmingham, integrating blue and white collar, professional and layman into a very sociable pot-pourri. The club has a proud history, winning the North Midlands Cup 3 times in the 70s and 80s and winning the North Midlands Sevens Cup 7 times. Dixonians was one of the leading Birmingham clubs behind Moseley, frequently playing and beating their powerful teams of the past, albeit the Moseley United team. Ding-dong battles are also recorded against teams like Stourbridge and Worcester, who were both toppled by the powerful Dixies’ team during the 70s and 80s when they were located out towards Hagley. The end of the 80s witnessed a slight fall from grace as league rugby took hold. The club bravely relocated to its city roots about 15 years ago to permit access to more players. Last year the club found its present home which is now its home for life, and an idyllic paradise at that. The player recruitment since then and the promotion last year show the dividends of that foresight.  A wonderful ground, with the best drainage in Midland leagues, permits flowing 15 a side rugby and tries that would have Fijians hollering with approval, never mind the hordes of faithful Dixies’ fans. This is supplemented by the renovated clubhouse with beautiful views over the pitches. Floodlights are now installed and all training apparatus such as the Predator and pads, bags etc are provided. New sponsors are providing the club with kit, and players will benefit from new training kit and after-match shirts. Thus the club is perfectly geared to consolidate their position in their new league Midlands West 4 North against traditional rivals like Selly Oak and Old Yardleians. Promotion is the next target. Come and sign up The club is now nearly 95 years old and we areapproaching our centenary in 2013. Historically the club was formed by the Old Boys of George Dixon School and has always been based on the west side of Birmingham, close to its historic home in Edgbaston. We welcome new players and the club’s current membership reflects the cosmopolitan nature of Birmingham, withFrenchman, Fijians and Zimbabweans rubbing shoulders with locally bred players.The club has a proud history, winning the NorthMidlands Cup 3 times in the 70s and 80s and winning the North Midlands Sevens Cup 7 times.In 2004 the club formed a partnership withLordswood boys school. Together we haveambitious plans for the development of youthrugby in the area evidenced by the proposed roll out of the successful U15 and U12 teams to local schools. The promotion of the first team toMidlands West 3 and the proposed investment infacilities should lead to raucous centenarycelebrations in six years time.The Moor Lane Pavilion is near to the Perry Barr campus. Using Perry Barr as a starting point travel along the A453 Aldridge Road in the direction that takes you away from the city centre. Continue along the A453, passing underneath the M6, until it becomes College Road. Moor Lane is not far along College Road on the right. |
