The Leicester Lions Rugby Football Club was formed in the summer of 1999 by the
amalgamation of Westleigh RFC (founded in 1904) and Wigston RFC (founded in 1946) both
clubs with proud traditions.
The aim of the merger was to provide Leicestershire with a second senior club playing the
national leagues, in addition to Leicester Tigers.
The record of the new club illustrates the success to date of the "Lions." The Leicestershire
County Cup was won in 2000, 2001 and 2004. The Colts Cup was taken in 2001 and 2004
while the Leicestershire 2ndXV Cup was won in 2002 and 2003. The Lions were Midlands One
champions in the 2005 season and joined National Three North at the start of season 2005/6.
The move up to national league rugby was a mighty learning curve on and off the pitch,
we finished the seasons in 12th position in the league but with alot more confidence and
knowledge moving into the 2006/07 seasons.
Where we brought in our new coaching team at with Glyn Evans Chief Executive (Playing),
Chris Tarbuck Director of rugby,John Russell, John Browden and Jason Button as Playing
coaches.
Where we finished the season 7th in the league table and we are looking forward to our 3rd
season in the national.
The club is currently fielding five adult teams and eight mini and junior sides with 265 players.
All members look forward to a successful season with the club playing its 3rd season in the
national leagues with lower and younger teams achieving good league positions and fruitful
cup competition.
