You need JavaScript enabled to view it Phone: 01469 531119 In 1963, three local school teachers were talking over a pint or two in the Six Bell's in Barrow upon Humber, about introducing a new field sport into the area. After several late nights and several more pints Bartonians RUFC ( later to be known as Barton and District RUFC) was formed in The George Hotel, Barton upon Humber. The three individuals responsible for the birth of many a quiet Saturday night sipping on Pims and talking over local folk law for hundred of young men who have joined club were Ken Shipstone, Ernie Braithwaite and Tony Reed. The newly formed club went from strength to strength and after only 3 weeks was joined by Charlie Cann who became a mainstay within the club and took on the roll of Club Secretary and Harry Dean as Club President. At this time the club with the permission of 2 local Headmasters J Taylor (Bereton school) and N Goddard (Grammar School) was playing its fixtures on the school grounds whilst its welcoming watering hole was supplied by Bob Griffis of the Volunteers Arms and so retaining the all important relationship between Rugby and Ale. After only 3 years of its formation and some long negotiations by Joe Screaton and Charlie Cann with the National Playing Field Association, the club moved to its present site and was officially opened in April 1968 by the clubs patron The Earl of Yarborough. |
