In 1926 the Park Modern School was founded in Barking and the first headmaster, Mr Bill Easterby decided, against some opposition in a predominantly soccer area, that the school would play rugby. Four years later Park Modern Old Boys RFC was founded and a total of 19 fixtures were played in that first season, 16 of which were won. After the war years the club continued to prosper, with the school continuing to turn out players in increasing numbers. The unofficial Saturday night headquarters after the war was the Royal Oak until, saddened by the sight of so much money going into a publican's till, moves were made to find their own premises. It was not until 1962 though that 'temporary' premises were found next to the Barge Aground and this temporary site lasted until 1973 when a new clubhouse was opened in South Park Drive. By 1974 the club was no longer strictly an Old Boys club and so the name was changed to Barking Park RUFC, becoming plain Barking RUFC two years later. The advent of league rugby was a godsend for Barking and they moved steadily upwards, producing some exceptional players along the way. Most people know that Jason Leonard learned his rugby at Barking, but fewer are aware that Welsh international Glyn Llewellyn played in the same Barking Colts side as Jason, along with former Director of Rugby Dean Cutting. In 1989 they opened their current premises alongside the A13 at Goresbrook, actually in Dagenham and they reached the national league in 1994, remaining there ever since.

Getting there from M11: At end of M11 take A406 eastbound towards A13. Follow A13 towards Dartford Tunnel until you reach Gale Street on left, half a mile after flyover. Getting there by public transport: C2C train from Fenchurch Street to Barking then District Line eastbound to Becontree (two stations) or 287 bus from stop opposite Barking station to Goresbrook Leisure Centre.
